The #1 Sale You Have To Make Everyday

#1 Sale You Have To Make Everyday

Every sales person has to make this one sale everyday they wake up. You have to always get a "Yes" in order to start the day.

by Rodney R. Fisher

When I started my sales career over 13 years ago, one of the hardest obstacles to overcome was my own mindset. You can call it attitude, mood, or demeanor, but either way when I woke up every morning it seemed that I was either ready for the day or not ready.

In my freshman year in college I worked as a home theater salesman for Fry's Electronics. I remember walking in early one Saturday morning looking like I didn't sleep 10 minutes the night before, although I had plenty of rest. Sure, I sat through the "rah-rah" sales meeting that morning and clapped like everyone else, but I knew I was going to be content with just going through the motions of a retail sales position. Help this person, then help that person and hope somehow I get a sale in the process.

Little did I know that the general manager Richard Kwong was watching my very lackluster performance that morning. Two hours into my shift he calmly walks up and pulls me to the side.

He says, "Did you make the sale this morning?"

"No sir, I don't have a sale yet, but it's early."

"No, did you make the sale when you woke up!", he replied.

I had no answer, because I had no idea what he was talking about. So I did what every 19-year old kid would do and just looked confused.

"Son", he continued, "you have to make the most important sale everyday when you wake up. You have to sale yourself. You have to get yourself to buy in that you are a sales person, at Fry's, and you are going to do whatever it takes to be successful today."

The more I got older and continued my sales career, the more that piece of advice made sense to me. You have not sold yourself on who you are and what you do, then you are not ready for the day. You truly can't be ready.

It doesn't matter if you are in sales or not, you have to fully understand who you are and what it is going to take to be successful today and long term.

So every morning, I make the #1 sale. I use my goals and values for rebuttals, but I make the sale before I get started.

Have you made the sale?
